Urban Freight and DSPs
Since 2012 there has been an 8% increase in vans in the central London congestion charge zone. This is against a backdrop of a decrease in private car traffic over the same time period. Cities across the UK are grappling with the impacts of urban freight vehicles, including congestion and poor air quality. One key approach to addressing these issues is the use of Delivery and Servicing Plans (DSPs) which are attached to individual development sites. DSPs have three key functions:
1) to define a set of procedures for handling freight vehicle movements;
2) to gather ongoing data about freight vehicle activity; and
3) to implement efficiency measures to minimise the impacts of freight movements.
MP Smarter Travel works on behalf of local authorities, Business Improvement Districts and individual businesses to develop and deliver DSPs and address the impacts of urban freight trips.
